Celandine: Chelidonium majus (L.)

Why celandine? The name chelidonium is from the Greek word for “swallow” (chelidon) because the plant flowered when the swallows were returning to Europe. We are not sure if this is still the case. Celandine has many valuable uses, but is most notably useful for supporting healthy memory and promoting a normal immune system in healthy adults.

Quality Assured: Our certified organic celandine is responsibly sourced from CroatiaThis herb is Certified Organic by Oregon Tilth and grown without the use of genetic engineering, artificial fertilizers, or pesticides.

Benefits: Celandine is a powerful herb! When used in consultation with a registered herbalist, celandine can support healthy immunity and may even sharpen your memory.

Cautions and Contraindications:

The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) cautions: Keep out of reach of children. Consult a practitioner prior to use. Herbs should always be used with care. Not to be used during pregnancy or nursing. Not recommended for infants or toddlers, or for extended periods of time.

If using celandine, we recommend seeking the guidance of a registered herbalist and/or your trusted holistic health physician. Celandine should be only used in the correct amount and administered for a short period of time (no longer than 14 days) to avoid irritation to the liver. The homeopathic version of Chelidonium majus is a safe alternative. Other more mild alternatives are blessed thistle Cnicus benedictus or gentian Gentiana lutea.

Formula:

TINCTURE OF CELANDINE

Celandine Chelidonium majus leaves or root (fresh): 2 ounces

Alcohol (vodka): 1 pint

Pulp and bruise the leaves, allowing the juice to flow. Add the herb to the alcohol and let stand for eight to 14 days in a warm spot that is not exposed to full sunlight. Shake once or twice a day. Strain through muslin or filter paper. Store in an airtight, dark colored bottle or jar. The tincture can also be prepared from the fresh or dried root. Remember, the herb and root lose a certain amount of their potency when dried.
