Sweet Fennel Seed: Foeniculum vulgare ssp. vulgare var. dulce

Why Sweet Fennel Seed? References to the use of fennel date back to Greek and Roman writings, and fennel has been a staple throughout Europe and China. Fennel seeds have been used in culinary preparations to add a licorice-like flavor to bread, candies, pickles, as well as liqueurs and other beverages.

Benefits: Traditionally, fennel has been used to support the following; normal digestion, already healthy blood sugar, normal breast milk production, already healthy infant weight gain, and already healthy kidneys. It can also be made into a hot infusion to support a sharp mind and memory.

The Apothecary Shoppe fennel seed is known as "sweet" fennel, which contains less of the compound estragole than its counterpart, "bitter fennel" or Foeniculum vulgare var. vulgare.

Formula:

TUMMY TEA:

Sweet Fennel Foeniculum vulgare ssp. vulgare var. dulce: 1 teaspoon

Flaxseed Linum usitatissimum: 1 teaspoon

Licorice Glycyrrhiza glabra: 1 teaspoon

Oatstraw Avena sativa: 1 teaspoon

Pour the boiling water over the herbs and leave it to steep for 5-10 minutes. Strain the tea, and it’s ready to drink. Sweeten with organic honey to taste.

Cautions and Contraindications: Fennel can cause photodermatitis, and excessive exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light should be avoided. The German Commission E Monographs note that fennel can cause allergies and should not be used for prolonged periods without a professional consultation. People with allergies to the Apiaceae family––carrot, mugwort, celery––should use caution with fennel.

The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) cautions: Keep out of reach of children. Consult a practitioner prior to use. Herbs should always be used with care. Not to be used during pregnancy or nursing. Not recommended for infants or toddlers, or for extended periods of time.

If using this herb, we recommend seeking the guidance of a registered herbalist and/or your trusted holistic health physician.
