Skullcap: Scutellaria lateriflora (L.)

Why Skullcap? Don’t let the nickname “madweed” put you off this calming herb. Traditionally, North American Indians used skullcap as a tonic to help soothe and pacify nerves. Skullcap both calms and provides a transition into a healthy state of peace in healthy adults. Whether you’re having a hectic day, or feeling mildly tense, skullcap may be just the herb you need.

Formula:

PEACEFUL HERBAL BLEND

Skullcap Scutellaria lateriflora: 1 ounce

Hops Humulus lupulus: 1 ounce

Catnip Nepeta cataria: 1 ounce

Valerian Valeriana officinalis: 1 ounce

Black cohosh Cimicifuga racemosa: ½ ounce 

Mix the herbs and store in a dry airtight container. Prepare a standard infusion or powder and place mixture in capsules. Use four to six tablespoons of the infusion on retiring or two to four capsules, three times a day.

Cautions and Contraindications: Do not use skullcap while pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not use more than the recommended dosage as giddiness, stupor, confusion, and seizures can be caused by an overdose of skullcap. The AHPA classifies skullcap as safe when used appropriately.
